Our History

Where We’re Comin’ From

Falcon Publishing was founded in Helena, Montana in 1979 with one book—Hiking Montana by company president Bill Schneider. From there Falcon went on to become America's leading publisher of outdoor recreation titles, its list growing to more than 700 titles before it became part of the Globe Pequot family of books in the fall of 2000.

Since this time, nearly all of Falcon’s core titles, such as its area-specific hiking, biking, paddling, and rock climbing books, have been or will soon be updated, expanded, and thoroughly revised. These revisions have introduced a more intuitive approach to design and presentation and an even greater appreciation for local knowledge by local authorities and outdoor enthusiasts.

In addition to the extensive revisions and improvements to Falcon’s content and design is the inclusion of more accurate maps utilizing the latest in digital technology. Hypsometric and physiographic views of the earth’s surface, route maps with UTM and Lat/Lon grids for full GPS compatibility, elevation profiles showing each route’s ups and downs, and overview maps to help users easily locate their next destination are all common features in our new and updated outdoor guides.

The introduction of surfing, road biking, and birding guides, an expansion of our successful rock climbing series, and additional titles to nearly every outdoor recreation guidebook series we publish, including hiking, paddling, camping, and outdoor destination guides are all indicative of our excitement, enthusiasm, and drive to be not only the preferred resource on outdoor adventure, but also the hallmark of guidebooks on the subject.

Falcon’s line of instructional guides continues to grow as well with the introduction of the popular Basic Essentials® books, additions to our important How to Climb® series, updates to many of our valuable navigation, first aid, and wilderness survival titles, and the addition of such authors as Jonathan Vaughters, Greg Davenport, Katie Brown, and Buck Tilton.

Falcon now has the most comprehensive series of wildflower field guides, animal scats and tracks books, and other nature and field guides, and continues to build its list of topical nonfiction, history, wildlife conservation, and four-color celebration books of the outdoors.

A large part of Falcon’s continued success as the world’s leading publisher of outdoor recreation titles comes from our unwavering focus. Our books do more than lead readers from Point A to Point B; they engage the spirit of the sports lover and capture the very heart and soul of outdoor America, its fascinating history, and its incomparable beauty. Six years and hundreds of books, thousands of maps, and countless trips into the wilderness later, a FalconGuide continues to feel as much at home on a coffee table as it does dog-eared and beaten in a backpack.
